Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells and start in the bone marrow, most common childhood leukemia is ALL (Acute lymphoblastic leukemia) which commonly diagnosed at age 2 – 7 years old. The exact causes of leukemia have not yet been known. There are numerous reports of multiple cases of factors that increase the risk of developing the leukemia symptoms such as the people who got amount of radiation or the people with abnormal chromosomes. Children with acute myeloid leukemia are sometime diagnosed after developing a chloroma . Several research show that childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a heterogeneous group of cancers.
To confirm a diagnosis of leukemia, bone marrow is tested. If occurring more than 25% blasts (immature of white blood cells such as myeloblast, lymphoblast) in the marrow confirms the diagnosis. If the result is positive then therapy must begin as soon as possible. Chemotherapy is always used to treatment as this method has the highest survival rate. Doctor will stop multiplication of leukemic cells by chemotherapy including drug therapy. The treatment of childhood leukemia is focused towards achieving a complete remission with minimal side-effects. The drug therapy can produce several side-effects such as infections, nausea, hair loss, loss of appetite and weight loss, reduction in the number of blood cells produced by the bone marrow, nausea, vomiting and anorexia. The purpose of the therapy is to heal the bone marrow. Bone marrow transplantation is only used for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia that is likely to come back following chemotherapy. The good news is that therapy is getting better, so the children with leukemia have higher survival rate but the survival rate depends on how far the leukemia has advanced and on what form of childhood leukemia.
